New York clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Hillai Govreen joins Rio de Janeiro-based seven-string guitarist Artur for an intimate exploration of the musical connections between jazz and choro.

Coming from a rich musical family tradition, Artur has an in-depth knowledge of the traditional repertoire as well as the unique rhythmic language of the seven-string guitar. Hillai, on the other hand, is influenced by many Brazilian composers and brings her experience in jazz improvisation and contemporary creative music.

Together, they blend lyrical melodies, improvisation, and the rhythmic richness of Brazilian music to create a sound universe that is both deeply rooted in tradition and open to spontaneous discovery. Drawing inspiration from Brazilian instrumental music, South American composers, the jazz repertoire, and their own arrangements, the duo highlights the affinities and bridges between these different musical worlds.

Through the warm resonances of the seven-string guitar and the expressive voice of the clarinet and saxophone, their performance celebrates dialogue, listening, and the power of music to transcend languages, cultures, and geographical boundaries.

As part of the Jazz sur Seine 2026 festival.
