Continuing from bossa nova, Música Popular Brasileira (or MPB) emerged, driven by a new generation of musicians who have since secured their place in the pantheon of Brazilian music. Less carefree than bossa nova, MPB gradually became a vehicle for more political messages in the context of military dictatorship.
