An architect of silence, a poet of dissonance, a master of oblique rhythms and angular melodies, Thelonious Monk remains one of the most singular figures in the history of jazz. For this late-night performance, three voices engage in a dialogue around his work: Simon Chivallon on piano, whose subtle touch and freedom of improvisation reveal Monk's depth and irony; Thomas Bramerie on double bass, a pillar of groove and collective breathing; and Thomas Galliano on drums, exploring angles, silences, and dynamics in the free and percussive spirit so dear to Monk.
Born in 1983 in Nice into a home steeped in music — a guitarist father, a mother who was a radio voice on FIP, and Weather Report's album Heavy Weather playing in the background — Thomas Galliano grew up immersed in the most demanding jazz. Trained at the Nice Conservatory in classical percussion and then jazz, he honed his skills under the tutelage of Jean-Luc Dana, Gérard Carocci, and Mokhtar Samba. A pivotal encounter with Elvin Jones at the Nice Jazz Festival, who gifted him his own drumsticks, proved decisive. Now based in New York, he released his debut album, Walking Towards The Unknown, on the Fresh Sound New Talent label, alongside Myron Walden, Victor Gould, and Josh Evans.
